Stepping into your first branding session is always an exciting but nerve-wracking experience. You’re there because you *need* something: a fresh look, a better connection with your audience, quality visuals that actually align with your brand, or maybe even all of the above – and that’s a lot of pressure to take on.
As photographers for 10+ years, we’re all too familiar with the jittery feelings that come with being photographed professionally for the first time. And that means we also understand the importance of looking and feeling your best when it’s finally time to step in front of the lens.
So what small actions can you take to bring your best self to the scene?
1.) FIRST, BRING MULTIPLE OUTFITS
If your photographer allows it, try to include a variety of looks in your images and think through the different vibes you want to portray. This helps to make your shoot more timeless and useful across various platforms!
2.) PRIORITIZE COMFORT
If you’re not comfortable in your outfit choices, it will show in your images. Be authentic to you, and avoid anything that makes you feel stiff or needs constant adjustments.
3.) INCORPORATE BRAND COLOURS
Dressing in brand colors can help to boost your brand recognition and make your visuals more cohesive and attractive across your various platforms.
4.) WEAR SOLID COLOURS
Avoid heavy busy patterns, logos or big wording, as these may cheapen and distract from the quality of your images. Less is more!
5.) CONSIDER YOUR MESSAGING
Really take the time to reflect on the values and messaging you want to portray. i.e. If you want a more relaxed feel to your biz, then dress more casual!
6.) THINK AHEAD!
If fall is coming up but you do your brand session in the summer, you’re not going to want to post photos of yourself in a bright sundress when you’re feeling cozy sweaters and a warm fall color palette! Consider seasons, upcoming promotions, changes to your biz…etc.
7.) GET A SECOND OPINION
Take some shots of yourself in front of the mirror and get your friends or family to weigh in honestly. Sometimes we can’t see what others do and getting a second opinion really helps!
BONUS: this is also a great way to remind yourself that you’re your toughest critic, and those small details you’re nitpicking aren’t as bad as you think!
Before we sign off, we want to leave you with a friendly reminder that with the *right* photographer, you’ll be able to walk away from your branding shoot feeling as confident and excited as ever, no matter how you felt when you first walked in. So shake off those nerves, have fun exploring all your ideas, and leave it to us to handle the details – you got this!
